Maine Inside Out:
Broken Clocks Documentary
Client: Maine Inside Out
Maine Inside Out ignites collective creativity and inspires social action by engaging youth and adults impacted by systemic oppression to create and share original theater. As a nonprofit theater organization based in Lewiston, Maine Inside Out creates theater with people inside and outside of prisons, building connection, surfacing hidden truths, and confronting the human costs of incarceration.
For the second year in a row, Maine Inside Out invited us in to document their creative processes, performances, and discusses as they toured an original play titled Broken Clock. We followed the ensemble into community theaters, universities, correctional centers, and Maine State Prison as they performed Broken Clock and facilitated vulnerable discussions with respective audiences.
At the center of our documentary process was authenticity; as we profiled this tour it was essential that we did the performers, the participants, the stories justice through accurate and collaborative storytelling. It was an honor to make this film, and bear witness to the bravery, vulnerability, and perspective of all parties.
